Synopsis: What Oral Systemic
Balance (OSB) is all about
· Inter-relatedness:
Our bodies should be viewed as one organism. No part of the body is not useful or not related to some other organ or system.
(E.g., when we feel an object with our hands and see with our eyes, our brains may then decide what it is.)
·
Compensatory mechanisms: If something adverse happens to one part of the
body, something else in the body compensates for this deficiency or to remove the source of irritation or injury.
(E.g. when it is hot, we perspire to release some of the heat.)
· Balance cannot be assumed: Sometimes the compensations are too intense or not intense enough.
(E.g., if you take a drug that you are allergic to, a mild reaction would be a skin rash; but a severe reaction would
be anaphylaxis which may result in death.)
- But balance must be restored: If our bodies are not
able to restore balance (homeostasis), then we have to give them some help. (E.g., if you are dehydrated,
you need to drink water! If you are hungry, you need to eat!)
