Premise for Oral Systemic Balance (OSB) Therapeutics
· Compromises:
We cannot assume that our mouths and throats are functioning optimally. The mouth and throat perform
these functions: breathing, swallowing and speaking. Many factors may compromise these functions: the size of the tongue,
loss of muscle tone of the tongue and its surrounding tissues, a small mandible (lower jaw), teeth that intrude into the space
meant for the tongue, TMJ pain or dysfunction, deviated nasal septum, injuries, surgeries, etc.
· Compensations: When we are unable to breathe well, swallow well or speak
well, we automatically compensate for these functions (by for e.g., repeated clearing of the throat, walking with our heads
tilted forwards and downwards, we talk more to breathe more often, we become more active to stimulate breathing, or we drink
more stimulants.) However, sometimes there may be long-term compensations and over-compensations (e.g.
the adrenals work overtime to keep the body awake, or our hearts pump harder and more often). These long-term compensations
and over-compensations may result in being in a state of anxiety, constant pain, fear of falling asleep, depression, fear
of death, sometimes even suicidal.) All these compensations are effected through
the Autonomic Nervous System which controls all the body processes that sustain life (e.g. blood pressure, immune system,
feeding and drinking). Correction: If the problem
is in the throat, we correct the problem at source. Most of the time, the problem is with the tongue.
The tongue does not belong in the throat; it belongs in the oral cavity. If we can bring the tongue back into the mouth,
we can correct problems with breathing, swallowing and speaking. Then the body does not need to compensate
for these hypo- or hyper-functions. That is what OSB Therapeutics does and that is the state of
Oral Systemic Balance (OSB).

How do I know if I am out of Oral Systemic Balance (OSB)? 1. Through
your symptoms: a. TMJ pain or dysfunction (pain, clicking, clenching, grinding); b. Craniofacial
pain (pain in the head and neck area); c. Sleep apnea (sleep disorder,
restless sleep, tiredness when you wake, exhausted in the day); d. Signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (snoring,
restless legs, gasping for breath); e. Vital signs (poorly regulated blood pressure, heart rate irregularities,
poorly regulated response to heat or cold); f. Anxiety symptoms (“on-edge” feelings,
combativeness, frustration, etc). 2. Through clinical signs
(e.g. talkativeness, tiredness, breathing difficulty, swallowing difficulty, sleepiness, medical and dental history,
etc). 3.
Through clinical testing: a. Of effectiveness of breathing, swallowing
and speaking; b.
Vital signs monitoring; c. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) testing; d. Imaging
(X-rays and scans); e. Posture analysis;
f. Monitoring of progress;
How do I achieve Oral Systemic Balance (OSB)? 1.
Analysis and diagnosis of the problem. 2.
Treatment with OSB orthotics custom made
by OSB and custom fitted in our office. 3. Follow up. (This may consist of initial, intermediate as well as long-term follow-up and adjustments to treatment protocol.)
Does everybody who is treated achieve Oral Systemic Balance (OSB)?
We
wish that everybody would achieve balance. However, there may be some factors that may require other forms of intervention.
For e.g., somebody who has an extremely large tongue may not achieve absolute balance but he may breathe a lot better than
before or he can swallow a lot better than before. Or certain psycho-emotional factors may need to be overcome –
factors that are outside the control of the dentist.
However, balance is not absolute; it is a range.
Homeostasis is defined as the regulation of a person’s internal environment so as to maintain a stable, constant condition.
It is not an absolute point but rather, it is a range. Oral Systemic Balance (OSB) Therapeutics helps in the improvement
of the ease of oral functions (breathing, swallowing, speaking) and in turn, the body further compensates to return itself
into a state of balance. This may take time and is different for everybody.

What is involved in the OSB treatment process?
1. Clinical evaluation.
We require an initial evaluation of our patients first so that we can determine his or her suitability to be treated
with OSB Therapeutics. We also sit down to discuss findings with our patients. This usually takes 45 minutes.
2.
Initiating treatment. This is when records are taken (HRV, posture analysis, Xrays
and imaging, vital signs, and impressions of the mouth) and an interview is conducted. 3. Fitting
of orthotics. When the OSB orthotics are ready, they will be custom fitted into patient’s
mouths. 4.
Follow-up. A schedule for following-up with patient will be established.
Periodically, Xrays and other clinical tests will be done to monitor progress.
Disclaimer OSB orthotics are used for the improvement of the oral functions of breathing, swallowing and speaking.
It is not intended for the treatment of other medical conditions.
